Why Wear Contact Lenses

Many people wear contact lenses for different reasons. Some wear them for fashion and most wear because of the health condition of their eyes. They are popularly used as substitute to regular eyeglasses.

What are contact lenses? They are small plastic visual devices with a curve shape that will follow the shape of the wearer’s eyes. They are used to correct vision problems (myopia and hypermetropia). They are corrective measures for the eyes and also, for therapeutic and cosmetic reasons.

There are types of contact lenses: the soft and the gas permeable (RPG) or rigid contact lenses. But the question as to which type is good for you, the choice depends on your eye care practitioner. Soft types are made of hydrophilic plastics that absorb liquid and must be kept moist for softness. This kind is extremely comfortable and gives easier molding to the corneal surface. It is commonly used over the other. Rigid lenses are composed of durable and flexible plastics. It allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea. It is also easier to maintain. Another type is the corrective versus the cosmetic contact glasses. Corrective type enhances eye vision while cosmetic type is used for fashion or functional perks. Daily and extended wear contact lenses are another pair of the different types. Daily type is used only during day time while extended type can be worn overnight up to six or more successive nights. The last pair is the toric and the spherical contact lenses. In spherical type, the power correction focuses on all meridians while in toric contact lenses, the power correction is different meridians.

Further, they are capable of correcting problems that spectacles can and other problems that glasses cannot correct. It can improve vision to those people with damaged corneas caused by disease or injury. It is preferred more than glasses because it can improve appearance as compared to glasses. For those who are active in sports, it is also more convenient to use. If you are a swimmer, lenses can be used as long as the person wears tight or fitted goggles.

They also have the following advantages over common eyeglasses:
a) since it is worn right to your eye, it gives natural vision and the field of view is in focus (this is very important to people active in sports and also those who drive);
b) has no obstructions or reflections as compared to using glasses, there are reflections of the backside of the lens;
c) it does not fog up when temperature or weather changes;
d) no uncomfortable weight to your ears and face;
e) matches in every color you wear and is cheaper than buying different colors of frames to match; and
f) it do not destruct your natural appearance and makes you look attractive for they let people see your eyes.

With the advantages cited over glasses, better decide now and wear contact lenses! Go to your eye doctor now and see the difference.
