Why Use Disposable Monthly Contact Lenses

Disposable monthly contact lenses are pretty much the norm today. But why is that? Perhaps it’s the convenience offered by disposable lenses, or maybe it is simply a safer way to wear contacts, and to protect your eyes. This is not to suggest that contact lenses are unsafe, it is more to do with the fact that many contact lens users don’t take enough care over the hygiene that is essential to correct and safe use. Taking all this into account, disposable lenses are an easier and safer solution.

However, just because you decide to use disposable contact lenses does not mean you should be careless with the hygiene associated with general contact lens wear. Far from it. We are, after all, discussing your eyes, which are very sensitive. By looking after your lenses in the prescribed manner, you are looking after your eyes, which should be a very important consideration for you.

Monthly disposable contact lenses were created to fulfil a market need: the more often they are replaced, the clearer the users vision. Add to that the fact that fresh lenses are more comfortable to wear, and healthier too, and the convenience of disposable lenses, means they were always likely to be a winner.

Soft contact lenses, which is what disposables really are, are made of a porous material and contain a large amount of water. An individuals tears will be absorbed into the lenses themselves.

These types of lenses will always have a build-up of foreign materials in and on the surface of the lens. No matter how careful you are at cleaning them, you will not be able to clean and disinfect them 100 percent. As you would expect, this means that the lenses themselves become less efficient in transmitting oxygen to the eye, which is necessary to keep the cornea healthy. The flip side of less oxygen is that the eye is more susceptible to infection.

Whichever way you look at it, disposable monthly contact lenses are a very good idea indeed.
