How to Use Armour Etch to Strip Eyeglass Coatings

Armour Etch is a commercial name for a cream used to repair plastic and glass surfaces and coatings. It is a chemical that etches the surface of the plastic or glass, stripping its UV coating. Armour Etch is usually used for repairing small scratches on an eyeglass lens, but it can also be used for stripping a whole layer of UV protection or another type of eyeglass coating. If you want to smooth and buff your lenses, you may want to learn how to use Armour Etch properly.

Instructions
things you’ll need:
Liquid soap
Foundation applicator sponge
Cloth
Cotton kitchen towel
Cotton swabs

1 Prepare your eyeglass lenses for the stripping process by cleaning it thoroughly. Use a mild cleaning solution or liquid soap with warm water to wash the lenses and rinse them thoroughly. Clean the lenses with a mild and soft sponge such as a small cosmetic foundation applicator sponge.

2 Dry the eyeglass lenses with a soft, pliable cloth or a cotton kitchen towel. Don’t use ordinary paper kitchen towels since they contain wood fibers, however small and undetectable, that can make microscopic scratches and damage your lenses.

3 Apply a generous coat of Armour Etch on both sides of the lenses, using a cotton swab to get the solution in all the corners. Wear disposable protective gloves for this part of the job.

4 Wait at least five minutes until Armour Etch works on the surface of the lenses. Check the instructions on the package to see exactly how long it takes for the solution to strip the whole coating on the lenses.

5 Rinse the eyeglass lenses thoroughly, using lukewarm or cold water to remove every last bit of the Armour Etch chemical.

6 Allow the eyeglass lenses to air dry, or use a soft cotton fabric to buff them until they are dry.

Tips & Warnings
After you have thoroughly washed and cleaned your eyeglass lenses, you can use an old cotton diaper, in place of a cloth or a cotton towel, to dry them off before applying the Armour Etch.

Use protective latex gloves when dealing with Armour Etch since it is a phosphoric acid that can irritate skin easily.

Never use an abrasive sponge or a coarse cloth to clean eyeglass lenses.
