There are several types of coatings that may be applied to eyeglasses to improve their performance. Anti-reflective or anti-glare coatings are applied to both the front and the back of the lenses to block reflected light. Scratch-resistance coatings are also applied to the front and back of the lens to protect against damage from improper cleaning or being dropped. Anti-fog coatings help reduce and eliminate the fog that forms on lenses when moving from a cold environment to a warm area. The fourth type of coating is an ultraviolet coating designed to eliminate UV rays. Removing these coatings may be necessary if the coatings become scratched or damaged and impair vision.
Instructions
things you’ll need:
Cotton cloth
Nonabrasive toothpaste
Water
Cotton towel
1 Apply a small amount of nonabrasive toothpaste to the front of each lens with a dry cotton cloth. Rub gently in small circles for 10 seconds. Rinse the lenses with cold water. Repeat the process on the back of each lens.
2 Dry each lens with a cotton towel. Hold the glasses up to a bright light and look through each lens to identify any areas that may need a second application.
3 Repeat the process until all coatings have been removed.
Tips & Warnings
The same process can be used with a paste made of baking soda and water.
Never use paper towels or tissues to clean glasses, as these contain small wood fibers that scratch the lens.
