Anyone who wears eyeglasses or sunglasses has run into the occasional break over the lifespan of the frames. The most common issue with plastic frames is improper fitting. Warm weather and general wear-and-tear can stretch the frame out, which causes them to sit crooked or slide off the bridge of your nose. Most fit problems experienced with a plastic frame can be repaired at home.
Instructions
things you’ll need:
Wide jaw angling pliers
Blowdryer
Crooked Fit
1 Lay the frame down on a flat surface as if they were on your face. The earpieces of the temples, which are the plastic coverings extending over your ears, should evenly touch the surface.
2 Determine which side of the frame is higher or lower than the other. Choose the temple that doesn’t touch the surface to adjust. Another option is to hold the frame at the bridge of the frame, with the sides of the temples at eye level. The temples should be horizontal and level with each other. Examine the hinge where the temple and frame meet. One temple should extend level from the frame. Whichever temple is lower or higher will be the one to adjust.
3 Heat the metal hinge of the temple with a hair dryer for approximately five seconds. Applying heat makes the metal more pliable, easier to bend and less likely to break during adjustment. The metal should always be warm, so it can bend. If the the hinge cools, reheat before adjusting.
4 Take a pair of wide jaw angling pliers. Quickly align its circular grooves over the screw of the hinge. Apply pressure to move the temple up or down, as necessary, until it is even with the other temple.
5 Place the frame on a flat surface again, checking for evenness. It may take several small adjustments to reach an even fit.
Sliding off nose
1 Put the frame on your face and feel where the temple begins to bend behind your ear. The temple should bend at 45 degree angle, laying comfortably over your ear.
2 Heat the curve in the temple with the blowdryer for approximately five seconds.
3 Placing one thumb in the groove of the curve and the other hand along the straight side of the temple, gently bend the end of the temple that extends over your ear downwards.
4 Try the frames on again. If you need to bend them a little more, repeat the previous steps until a comfortable fit is achieved.
Tips & Warnings
Extending the length of time you heat the frame may result in cracks in the plastic.
