Many people who have eye problems often dream of better eyesight without glasses. Glasses are cumbersome especially for people who enjoy sports and outside activities. Regular visits to the opticians can also burn a hole in your wallet.
Yet, what few people realise is that achieving vision correction without using glasses is not as difficult as they may think. The pioneering ophthalmologist William Horatio Bates dedicated his life and career to demonstrating that the majority of eye problems that people suffer from can actually be corrected without wearing glasses.
He came to this conclusion after spending years and years examining the eyes of thousand upon thousands of people. In fact he even went so far as to state that glasses rather than improving your vision, actually make it worse!
A close look at the research carried out by William Bates would seem to strongly suggest that this statement is correct. The alternative to wearing glasses that he suggested was a series of exercises which became known as the Bates Method.
The objective of these exercises is to relax the eye muscles, as he believed that the majority of eye problems are actually caused by eye strain. He stated that if the eyes were given the opportunity to relax and rest, they would in time heal by themselves.
The exercises include a number of exercise tasks which need to be carried out on a regular basis every day. These exercises are known as the Palming Exercise, the Swinging Exercise and the Sunning Exercise. Bates believed that each step in the exercise programme was a fundamental step towards achieving the goal of better eyesight without glasses. In fact since the creation of this exercise programme thousands upon thousands of people have been able to throw away their glasses.
