Contact Lenses – Are They Good For You?

Contact lenses, ever since they were introduced into the market, have been a revolution in the eyewear industry. Almost single-handedly, they have made glasses redundant. Although some people still swear by glasses, their numbers are steadily dwindling, as more and more people discover the wonder of contact lenses. As the name indicates, such micro-lenses just stay softly in contact with your eyeballs, without slipping off like glasses, or even without breaking like conventional glasses do.

Contact lenses free you from wearing glasses. For most people, that is their single biggest advantage, as it frees them from the task of wearing ungainly eyewear with thick, clumsy lenses. For no matter how high your power, far or near sighted, they ensure that they are all reduced to very small, paper thin lenses. They are especially helpful if you are into sports or lead a hectic, outdoors life in general. There is no possibility of suffering from any difficulty, a la glasses.

The best part is, contact lenses are available in all types. There are bi-focal contact lenses, and also colored lenses, which have had a big impact on fashion in recent times. You should remember, however, to contact your physician before you decide to put on those colored lenses for fun and fashion, or any lenses for that matter. This is because, although these have absolutely no side-effects, some people may be allergic to wearing them. In that case, your eyes start watering, irritations may occur, and sometimes, these can also be fatal, leading to permanent sight-loss.

Another significant reason why many physicians today advise the wearing of contact lenses is, and this is especially true for children, they help in preventing worsening of eye-sight, i.e stops your ‘power’ from increasing. It is a fact confirmed by medical surveys that the use of contact lenses helps in stabilizing the vision of those with high ‘power’- hence it ensures that a certain level is maintained. Compared to that, conventional specs do little to retard such worsening. If you do not want to go in for surgery at a later stage – which involves a great amount of risk, since it is your eyes we are talking about here – you would do well for yourself to get ‘contacts’, literally!

Finally, you should know that contact lenses are made from different materials are classified accordingly – soft, hard, gas permeable, and rigid gas permeable (RGP). You need to consult your physician to decide which would suit your needs the best. In general, soft lenses and RGPs are the most commonly used ones. There are durable lenses, lasting up to 1 year, and there are also disposable lenses, which can be changed every week, or every month, depending on conditions of usage, and also on the price range.

So, now that you know all, or at least, a lot of things about contact lenses, its uses and types, you can make a wise choice. Choose the right contact that would not only suit your looks but also suit your personality. Bring about a difference in your appearance.
