Many contact lens wearers get complacent when it comes to cleaning them, and begin to cut corners. However, over time, these shortcuts can lead to sub-standard eye health, and even to disease and vision problems. Follow these steps to ensure you are cleaning your contacts properly, and not putting your eyes at risk.
1. Don’t Reuse Solution
To save money, it can be tempting to use contact lens solution more than once. However, this can lead to the build up of bacteria in the solution, which can then be transferred to the lenses and your eyes. Be sure to empty out your solution immediately after putting your lenses in. Rinse the case with fresh solution and leave to air dry.
2. Rub Them With Care
When cleaning your lenses, most solutions require you to rub the lens gently on each side. Be sure to do this for a sufficient amount of time – normally around 10 seconds per side – and be sure to reach every part of the lens, not just the center. Also be careful not to rub too hard, as this can leave scratches on the lenses.
3. Replace Them On Time
If you wear disposable contacts, be sure to throw each pair away after you have worn them for the specified time. Although they may seem to be perfectly ok, microscopic damage builds up when you wear them, which can affect their fit and comfort.
4. Change Your Lens Case
It is important to replace the case that you store your lenses in, as this can accumulate dirt and germs. A good way to remember to replace this is to do it every time you buy a new bottle of solution – most come with a case included, so this is an excellent reminder.
5. Take A Day Off
Wearing your lenses day in, day out, can be a strain for your eyes. Try to take a day off once a week, where you wear your glasses instead of your contacts. This will give your eyes some time to relax and recover from the prolonged contact with your lenses.
Contact lenses can be absolutely fantastic, but it is important to remember that your eyes are very delicate, and as such you must take precautions to ensure that your lenses are not doing any damage to them. By following these steps you will give yourself the best chance of being able to enjoy contacts for many years to come
