Colored Contact Lenses – Jazzing Up the Eyes

Colored contact lenses are cosmetic lenses usually placed on the cornea of the eye. They can be corrective or therapeutic along with imparting a new color to the wearer’s eyes.

Colored contact lenses are of four main types – visibility tints, enhancement tints, opaque colored and light filtering lenses. There is a spherical area in the center of the lens which is devoid of any color. This part slides over the pupils and makes it possible for the wearer to see clearly despite the colored lenses.

Manufacturers sometimes add a faint blue or green tint to the normal lenses so that they are easy to spot and wear. These are known as visibility tints.

Enhancement tints are subtle tints which are added to the contact lenses to deepen the natural color of the eyes. These are only meant to bring out the natural color and not to change the color of the eyes entirely.

Opaque color tints change the color of the eyes completely. These are available in an array of shades depending upon individual skin types and requirements. General favorites are hazel green, blue or light brown. Other colors available are grey, aquamarine, amethyst, and violet. These are manufactured to perfection these days with subtle shading and lines to replicate the natural look.

Light filtering lenses are a recent development usually worn by sportsmen to subdue certain colors and enhance other colors. This helps them spot the ball easier.

Strangely colored contact lenses such as white or yellow were earlier used to theatrical advantage. These are available today as a novelty item to be worn to costume parties.

Colored lenses, though, must not be worn in harsh or very dim lights. The pupils of the eyes are designed to contract or relax depending upon the availability of light. If the pupils dilate, particularly in dim lights, there may be a distortion of vision.

These should be cared for as normal lenses. Daily disposable lenses need not be cleaned. They are meant to be discarded at the end of the day. Longer usage lenses have to be cleaned with a daily lens cleaning solution to avoid deposits of protein, which make the contact lens wear really uncomfortable. If the protein deposits do take place, they have to be cleaned with enzymatic cleaners.

As oily deposits from the hands are difficult to get rid of from the lenses, hands should be washed carefully before inserting and removing these lenses. Colored lenses are a perfect way to liven up party wear for men and women alike.
