Contact Lenses – Caring For Your Contact Lenses And Your Eyes

New contact lenses wearer tips

Wearing contact lenses is a really great way to give yourself independence from the daily wearing of glasses. I am not saying that you should wear your contact lenses every day but it is nice especially on weekends if you are doing sports to be sure that you have the peripheral vision and comfort as well as not having to worry about those pesky glasses slipping of your nose while sweating.

If you are new to contact lenses there are a few points that are worth remembering as you use your lenses and to make sure that you have no problems with your lenses and especially your eyes wearing those lenses.

1. Never wear you lenses for more than eight hours in a day. The way that your eyes treat contact lenses is as a covering over them and for your eyes to get proper oxygen it is important not to have them covered up for too long. Of course wearing for eight hours is fine but you would not want to wear them throughout a 16 hour day.

2. Soak your lenses in a Thimerosal free solution. Years ago I found that I was allergic to Thimerosal and because of this my eyes would get red from wearing my contacts. Once I started using a Thimerosal free contact lens solution I was fine.

3. Change lenses often. I wear disposable lenses and have tried over the years to increase the number of days that I can wear my lenses before throwing them out. This is a very bad idea. I have found that wearing my lenses for more than a couple of weeks leads to uncomfortable protein deposits as well as cloudy vision.

4. If something is in your eye take those lenses out. If you get dust or some other foreign debris in your eye immediately take your lenses out and rinse that stuff out of your eye before putting the contacts back in. If you just wait for the dirt to get out of you eye then you risk scratching your eye which as uncomfortable as it may be can also be dangerous and lead to infection.

5. Never touch your eyes with dirty hands. The dirt and oils that are on your hands can create grease spots on your contact lenses. You can avoid this by cleaning and thoroughly rinsing your hands before touching your eyes and contact lenses.

I hope these tips help. Although it may seem like a scary prospect for some I have been a contact lense wearer for 20 years off and on and really like the independence that my contact lenses give my compared to my glasses.
